Human Rights Torch Shines Light on Abuses in China
On May 9th the Global Human Rights Torch Relay will arrive in Winnipeg to raise awareness of human rights violations in China in advance of this summer’s Games in Beijing.
Falling short of calling for a boycott, the Human Rights Torch calls for an end to human rights abuses in China before the Olympic Games begin this summer.
On Friday, May 9th three events will mark the human rights torch passing through Winnipeg: a rally, a torch walk, and a concert.
Rally
Where: Legislative building
When: 4:30 p.m.– 5:00 p.m.
What: Community leaders and human rights advocates will welcome the torch’s arrival in Winnipeg and speak in support of human rights in China.
Torch Walk
Where: Departing from the Legislative Building, down Broadway to the Forks
When: 5:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.
What: Participants at the rally will be invited to accompany the torch on a walk to the Forks.
Concert
Where: Oodena Stage. At the Forks
When: 3:00 p.m.- 11 p.m.
What: A line up of great local musicians will play approximately 45 min sets with speeches, skits and other acts between sets. The scheduled line-up includes: The Wicked Afternoons, Serena Postel, The Bottlecap Blues Band, The Mission Light, The Dusty Roads Band, Xiaonan Wang, Lindsey White, J. St. James and the Organic Chocolate Shockwave and Moments of Brilliance
